The battery is typically located on the left-hand side (as viewed from the driver's seat) under the bonnet of the Audi TT. It is usually covered by a cover that can be removed with three screws. See here for the position under the bonnet in a 1.8T model.
No battery under the bonnet in a 3.2 V6 and quattro sport
However, this is not always the case. So don't be surprised if you can't find the battery straight away. There are two exceptions. In the Audi TT 8N Coupé and Roadster 3.2 V6 and the Audi TT 8N Coupé quattro sport version, you will find a gaping hole when you remove the cover.
This was a radical change that was first made in the 3.2 V6 when it was introduced in 2003. This was the first version in which the battery was moved to the spare wheel compartment, which was also removed and replaced by a “tyre mobility system”. The location of the fuse box remained under the bonnet.
Both versions had their own reasons:
- Audi TT 8N 3.2 V6
Because the 3.2 V6 requires a heavier battery (68/72 AH), the space under the bonnet became too cramped. So there was a physical need to find another place for the battery. This was found in the spare wheel compartment.
- Audi TT 8N quattro sport
In the quattro sport, the reason was to achieve a better weight distribution between the front and rear axles by placing the weight of the battery further back. A solution that was already available in the 3.2 V6 version.
