The Audi TT battery is typically located under the bonnet, on the left-hand side as seen from the driver’s seat. It’s usually protected by a removable cover secured with three screws. In the 1.8T model, you can clearly see the battery position under the bonnet here.

Hidden electric power — where to find your Audi TT 8N battery
Not every Audi TT keeps its battery under the bonnet. If you can’t spot it right away, don’t panic — you’re not alone.

Two models are the exception: the Audi TT 8N Coupé and Roadster 3.2 V6, and the Audi TT 8N Coupé quattro sport. When you lift the cover expecting a battery, you’ll instead find an empty space — a clear sign of Audi’s smart engineering choice.

This needed design optimization began with the 3.2 V6, introduced in 2003. From then on, the Audi TT battery was relocated to the spare wheel compartment, which was replaced by a tyre mobility system. Despite the move, the fuse box stayed right where you’d expect it — safely under the hood.

So, if your Audi TT battery isn’t where you thought it would be, check the boot. He may be hidden, but it’s never far away.

Both versions had their own reasons:

  • Audi TT 8N 3.2 V6
Because the 3.2 V6 requires a heavier battery (68/72 AH), the space under the bonnet became too cramped. So there was a physical need to find another place for the battery. This was found in the spare wheel compartment.
  • Audi TT 8N quattro sport
In the quattro sport, the reason was to achieve a better weight distribution between the front and rear axles by placing the weight of the battery further back. A solution that was already available in the 3.2 V6 version.
