Characteristic of the TT Coupé Concept were the sharp lines in the body's sheet metal. Something the designers definitely wanted to see reflected in the production version, and which was actually realised. For example, where the rear side screen joins the rear roof pillar (C-pillar). Leaving out this line would have completely ruined the design, said Peter Schreyer during an interview at the presentation.
However, this made it impossible to squeeze the side panel and the rear roof pillar (C-pillar) out of one part as usual (see the VW Golf IV and Audi A3 8L) and a solution had to be found.
As shown in the image, the TT opted for a separate rear side screen and roof pillar (C-pillar). These were then joined with a laser weld. An added complexity in production. But all for looks.
